The evaporation and decomposition of the urea aqueous solution (AdBlue) that is injected into the exhaust gas flow upstream of the SCR catalyst plays a crucial role for the performance of an SCR system. Ammonia being produced as a result of this decomposition must be homogeneously distributed over the catalyst surface in order to match perfectly with the NOx distribution.

This distribution depends strongly on the design and the geometry of the exhaust system. For most applications where high NOx reduction is desired, a mixer is used in order to enhance the above mentioned ammonia distribution. |

At Tenneco, the adjustment and optimization of the SCR system is carried out using a specially equipped flow lab and engine benches as well as CFD simulation. |
